start-up to scale-up
2019 - now | EMPATICA
SUMMARY
Over the past five years at Empatica, I've transformed from a junior designer to a senior service designer in a company that has moved from a start-up with a team of 40 to a scale-up with over 130 employees. My journey involved designing a unified platform during the pandemic, creating comprehensive design systems, and bridging gaps between operations and product teams. I've thrived in a regulated environment, navigating FDA guidelines and accessibility standards, and played a crucial role in both design and business operations.
My journey at Empatica has been of growth and adaptation. I joined when we were a team of 40 and I was just a junior designer, adapting while going back on my career since I have decided to go back to study. Now, I am the Senior Service Designer in a thriving organization of over 130 employees.
During my time at Empatica, I've worn many hats. From service designer creating a unified platform, to UX/UI designer making sure all our interfaces spoke the same language and creating user experiences that felt seamless across the board. All this while juggling FDA regulations and accessibility requirements.
But it wasn't all just pixels and wireframes. I found myself diving into how our company ran, developing a DesignOps framework, and noticing gaps between operational and product teams, setting this way our BusinessOps to bridge that divide.
At one point, we needed someone to step in as a Product Manager, and I thought, "Why not?" and jumped in. It was a crash course and made me learn a lot, and it kept things going until we established the team better and found our permanent PM.
Throughout all of this, I've learned even more about the adaptability of design and how my skills can make me adapt to whatever challenge comes my way. One day I'd be designing from stratch, the next I'd be mapping out operational flows, and then I'd be in meetings trying to get stakeholders on the same page (which, trust me, can feel like herding cats sometimes).
It hasn't always been easy, but it's been incredibly rewarding. My efforts have been recognized with high-performance reviews and most importantly it is great to see what I have designed been used by my colleagues or our users and clients. I have grown so much, I have learned how to deliver solutions that really make a different, even when things are uncertain.
Below, I love to share with you some of the main works I have developed, even if there are many more to add, being a small design team in a full stack company has this advantage.

Designing Empatica Health Monitoring Platform
One of the main projects was tackling our fragmented product ecosystem, and transforming it into a cohesive platform. This involved rethinking our product-service offer and journey, designing our user interfaces, and crafting a design system that helps to ensure consistency across all our products and make the development process smoother.

Mastering the Regulated Environment
Working in a regulated industry like medical tech isn't always easy. Designing has to go far beyond the 'normal' design process and follow FDA and accessibility guidelines while still trying to make products that people actually want to use. Developing different user testing, that ensured our products were easy to understand, use and follow health standards was what we need to do. Making it possible to create product that are safe, effective and engaging.

Revamping Epilepsy B2C
I played a key role in our B2C product transition from Embrace2 to the new platform. My job was to nail down the service design and create user-friendly interfaces. It wasn't just about making it look good - we wanted something people could actually use without frustration. The hard work paid off: EpiMonitor is now selling better than the old Embrace2. It was challenging, but seeing those sales numbers climb made it all worthwhile. We still have more to do, and we are currently upgrading the product to make it even better.

Driving Business Change and Strategy
While having to design the internal tools for empatica, I saw a chance to make things run smoother. So, I came u with the idea of the BusinessOps team to streamline our processes and get product and ops at the same page. After creating the team, we needed a Product Manger and I stepped in temporarily, keeping the team moving and on track during a time of need for Empatica.
